Check Your Insulation First

M&J Seamless Gutters has worked on thousands to install metal roofing in New Hampshire, and there are always questions revolving around ice dams and metal roofs. Often, we are asked if a home gets a new metal roof, will the ice dams no longer occur? It’s an important question, especially one where you’re making such a large financial decision, and the answer is yes and no.
Many people believe metal roofs will fix all the past problems with ice dam damages, but that is not always the case. Ice dams are still able to occur on homes with metal roofs, and can even still cause leaks and other issues because of how extensive ice dam damage can occur. Ice dams are caused by fluctuation of temperature on the roof itself, which means there are hot and cold spots on the roof based on the heat escaping from the home. One way to fix this problem is increasing insulation in your roof or attic space.

It might seem silly to consider just a “simple” fix for an extensive problem, but having proper insulation is important for a home to function well. If warm air is escaping to specific parts of your roof, melting snow, and reforming into ice in the colder areas, an ice dam will form. This can happen with any kind of roofing material, and can also be avoided. Pay attention to where air escapes into your attic space, seal it, and consider more insulation. If this problem continues to occur, then a metal roof might be the right decision for you and your family.
