Remove Debris
The first step in gutter cleaning is to remove any debris that accumulated in the gutters over the winter. This can include leaves, twigs, and other debris that can block the flow of water through the gutters. Use a ladder and a small trowel or a gutter scoop to remove debris.
Find the Leaks and Clogs
After you remove the debris, the next step is to check for leaks and clogs. There are three things you should do to find any leaks or clogs.
Flush out the gutters: Use a hose to flush out the gutters. This will remove any remaining debris and help to ensure that the gutters are free-flowing.
Look for leaks: As you flush out the gutters, look for any leaks or holes. If you find any, use a sealant to seal them.
Clear the downspouts: Make sure that the downspouts are clear and that water is flowing freely through them. If they are clogged, use a plumbing snake or a small garden trowel to remove the blockage.
Check the Hardware
There is also hardware that holds your gutters in place and diverts rain away from your roof. First, there are the gutter hangers that hold the gutters in place. Check to make sure that they are secure and that the gutters are properly aligned. Then there is flashing, which is the metal strip that seals the area where the gutters meet the roof. Check to make sure that it is secure and that there are no leaks. Finally, have a look at the slope. The gutters should have a slight slope, about a quarter inch for every 10 feet, to ensure that water flows properly. If the slope of the gutters is off, use shims to adjust them.
